Noémie L. Côté

Noémie L. Côté is a contemporary impressionist oil painter who specializes in bright, vibrant landscapes with lush texture and painterly colours. Being outdoors allows her to envelop herself completely in nature. Whether Noémie is standing by a lake or at the top of a rolling hill overlooking a vineyard, she finds everything in her head falls away and she is fully present. This is what inspires her work.

In her paintings the use of colour is not necessarily realistic, it is more a reflection of what she feels while immersed in that moment. That is what comes forth onto the canvas.

This year Noémie was featured in the online magazine All Things Home, where she created a painting of Leystone Farms vineyard inspired by the Pantone colour of the year - very peri. Noémie’s love of nature was ignited early when her family moved to Africa. As the only French speaking 9-year-old, in an English-speaking culture, she channeled her loneliness and feeling of isolation into observing her immediate surroundings. Studying the delicate shades of rose bushes and the large Acadia gum tree in my backyard. Her love of nature grew with the red and orange landscapes of southern Africa, its people and wildlife. Her first painting lessons were taught by one of Zimbabwe’s foremost talented painters and that set her on the path to becoming an artist.

When she returned to Canada at the age of thirteen, she discovered a whole new passion for the ever-changing seasons, the contrast of lush vibrant colours, and the stillness of snowy scenes that make up the Canadian landscape. This led her to the Canterbury High School of arts program where she graduated with honours. From there she went on to a career in graphic design, never letting go of her passion for painting. Over the years Noemie has studied at Concordia University and by the side of several renowned Canadian landscape artists. Today, you can find her painting landscapes full-time from her home studio in Ottawa.
